Getting To Belize
Most visitors get to Belize by air, but you can also travel by boat or car.
Most major airlines have flights to Belize via Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Miami or Los Angeles.
Belize By Boat
You can either come by your own boat, or take one of the small, regularly scheduled water taxis from Punta Gorda in the southern district of Toledo and Puerto Barrios in Eastern Guatemala.
Or take a cruise ship which stop at various ports along Belize. These include Belize City, Corozal, Dangriga, San Pedro and Punta Gorda. You will need to report to police or immigration authorities upon entering Belize.
The Road To Belize
You must be ready for a challenge if you want to come to Belize by car. The trip through Mexico is over 1300 miles. A solid vehicle and good driving skills are required. If you are coming in from Guatemala or Mexico, you'll need a temporary importation permit that you can get at the point of entry. These permits are valid for 1 month. You can extend them by applying to the Customs Department.
You'll need the following to get a permit:
- I.D. & travel documents
- Vehicle registration
- Insurance
- Rental documents (if applicable)
You may choose to come to Belize by bus. It can be an inexpensive way to get here. Take a bus from a US border city to Cancun, Mexico City or Chetumal. Regularly-scheduled buses go to Belize City with stops to the Northern towns of Corozal and Orange Walk.
You can, of course, from the south and take a bus from Guatemala City through Belize and which will give you a nice tour of the country.
