Snorkeling Adventure

Snorkeling Adventure

Your trip to Belize won't be complete if you miss out on the incredible marine life, unrivaled in this side of the world. One hundred eighty five miles of coral formations, flora, and countless marine creatures make up the Belize Barrier Reef. Also the largest in the Caribbean, it comes as no surprise that is it is one of the seven underwater wonders of the world.

Now, if you know how to swim but aren't quite ready for diving, you should try snorkeling. No matter what your age, as long as you know how to float, you can snorkel. In fact, snorkelers outnumber divers by a wide margin the world over.

You will find that you will be able to float effortlessly in the calm waters of the Caribbean. Since saltwater is denser than freshwater, you will be naturally buoyed up on the surface more than in lakes or rivers. Snorkeling equipment are available for rent in all resorts. However, it is advisable that you bring your own mask, snorkel, and flippers as it is usually difficult to get a proper fit.

Major snorkeling sites include those in Ambergris Caye, Southern Barrier Reef, Turneffe Islands, Lighthouse Reef, and Glover's Reef-the last three of which are atolls, or ring-shaped reefs surrounding a lagoon. Much of Belize's marine and coastal ecosystem is protected, and is also under the list of World Heritage Sites.

For an unusual snorkeling experience, you should try exploring the mangrove forests of Belize. Being a tropical country, it has the perfect climate for mangroves to flourish. They serve as nursery grounds for many varieties of marine animals, such as fish and lobster.

Seagrass beds-literally "pastures of the sea" for grass-eating creatures such as manatees, marine turtles, and conch-are also a great attraction. These sandy beds of seagrass are also home to the young of many marine species.
