Snorkeling Adventure
Dive and Let Dive
If you're tired from your grueling work schedule and all the marine life you ever encounter is your 2-year-old goldfish, then it's time to take a break. You should go where the breezes are fresh, where palm trees and not skyscrapers dot the skyline, where the pristine blue waters of the Caribbean beckon you to come and dive in. Go on a vacation to Belize.
Second only to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, the Belize Barrier Reef spans one hundred eighty five miles of coastline and teems with an abundance of corals, exotic sea creatures and marine plant life.
No wonder it has been declared as one of the World Heritage Sites by UNESCO and draws divers, novice and experienced alike, from all over the world. The atolls (ring-like islands of coral that surround a lagoon) of Belize-Ambergris Caye, Glover's Reef, Turneffe Islands, and Lighthouse Reef, and many others-are some of the best diving spots this side of the globe.
Diving, unlike snorkeling, allows you to reach greater depths and thus interact fully with all the marine life forms around you. Pet a passing manta ray, feed a dolphin, or touch a school of fish swirling past you. Just be careful to be gentle, especially with the corals, as they are very delicate structures and can easily break or die if you touch them.
These corals serve as home and feeding grounds to the hundreds of marine species in Belize and even as tourists, we all should play a part in being responsible for them.
If you have them, bring your own diving gear. Otherwise, worry not because all resorts have them available for rent. Remember, we all need to unwind and escape, even temporarily, from the cares in this world. When in doubt where to stay, think Belize-where diving has never been this good!
